Filmcraft as a Path of Heart
Filmcraft as a Path of Heart is both a creative discipline and a path of personal evolution.
It offers a way of making films—and living life—that is rooted in refined skills of the craft, attentiveness to the moment, intuition, and benevolence. It invites us to become not only skilled storytellers, but also attentive, discerning, and compassionate human beings. This approach views documentary filmmaking as a sacred trust: to see clearly, to listen deeply, and to tell stories that nourish rather than numb, that connect rather than consume.
For the filmmaker, this path is transformational. It cultivates intuition, heart, resilience, and ethical clarity. It turns the considerable challenges of the filmmaking process into opportunities for personal refinement. In a time when nihilism and distraction are widespread—and when the world aches for meaning—Filmcraft as a Path of Heart offers a way to respond with beauty, courage, skill and purpose.
I have taught this approach to filmmaking for many years, in public workshops, at Naropa University-West, at famed retreat settings like The Omega Institute and the Maine Photographic Workshops (now called Maine Media Workshops). If you feel a resonance with these values—if you're longing to tell stories that matter— reach out through the Contact page to let me know you'd like to be notified about upcoming offerings. Whether you're an experienced filmmaker or just beginning to sense a calling, I invite you to explore this unfolding journey with me.

“In my teaching I strive to impart the many ways in which filmmaking can bring wonder and richness into one’s life— how it can be a profoundly deep and satisfying way to engage with the world. Equally important is a focus on how to be aware and skilled as a visual storyteller, so that this heightened engagement results in the creation of beautiful and compelling films.”
